Porch Geranium | Spring Has Sprung?

There was frost on the cars earlier this week. It was 20°F on the thermometer when I sat down in the porch for my morning coffee. It's spring in the Keweenaw.

It's going to be one of those cold summers.


I bought myself a geranium from the drug store last week. She lives in the porch with my aloe plant, because despite the chilly outdoor air, our enclosed porch hasn't been below 50 degrees at night. I had intended her to be an outdoor plant in the ground near the garage. Geraniums encourage the wasps to keep a safe distance.

For now, she's an indoor geranium in a pot.



You may recognize the white planter in the photo from when I repotted my peace lily. The peace lily died, though admittedly not from the repotting experience (I forgot to water it for too long). Not sure what will live in the white planter next, but I re-used some of the dirt for this flower. I don't have much of a green thumb.

This weekend I plan on starting some marigold seeds, but they are going to be outdoor potted plants when the summer actually arrives. I'm keeping my growing very limited this summer since I'm also nursing a newborn and will be returning to work soon. I don't want to take on too much and fall behind on keeping up with my new year's resolution. Having a baby already derailed that goal a little, though I'm picking it back up again- same as blogging.

I write letters to my stepchildren. My stepchildren live with their mother, 3.5 hours away from us, during the school year. There's not much we can do about that since they need to attend school, but keeping in touch with their day to day can be hard. Loving Through the Mess- Painting

Hubby and I have almost finished painting at the new ho use.  We've been living here a few weeks now, but it's starting to finally feel like ours and not just someone else's place we are squatting in. As I mentioned in my previous post about moving while pregnant , we bought our new family home from smokers- who were gross enough to smoke indoors. Which meant there was no removing the smoke from some things. After lots of cleaning (hello vinegar), throwing away of window treatments (they were ugly anyway), odor sealing primer, and fresh paint you can't tell there were once smokers here. And damn was I shocked at how much the smoke residue was stressing me out. I haven't always been such a neat freak. I used to spend a lot of time in places that reeked of cigarette smoke in college, and didn't think twice about it. Not Just Living for the Sun | Facing Depression with Human Connections

Yesterday was the first warm sunny day we've had here in the Keweenaw in awhile. Most of us took a moment to bask in the glow of sunlight (I went to the beach to listen to the waves), but we can't live only for the sunny days. We need to know how to cope with the gloomy days too- because there's not a single person who doesn't have them. It's going to rain and snow sometimes. This time of year, the cabin fever blues (aka seasonal depression from lack of sunlight) is common around here. One of my friends made a comment recently that last winter she was depressed and really only enjoyed the handful of days she spent on vacation in the south. This winter she's been trying to get out and enjoy the snow, embrace the simple joys like a good cup of coffee, and live for each day- not just the sunny ones. River Fishing With Hubby

Otter River, Michigan My husband has been trying for years to get me to go fishing with him on the Otter River. I really have no interest in fishing, so I usually turn him down. However, every time I ask him to join me at an event that requires a shirt with buttons, he says I owe him a fishing trip. My number of trips owed is quite large, as this summer was my first time on the river. I have so little interest in fishing that I didn't even bring a fishing pole with me, but I did like the idea of tagging along and spending the afternoon outdoors with my husband.
